MINUTES OF LAST MEETING
The Minutes of the last meeting have already been circulated. After review,
It was moved by Betty MacDougall and seconded by Bill Drew that the Minutes of the meeting
held on March 7, 2017 be approved as circulated.
The meeting moved to a Committee of the Whole for discussion after which we returned to our
A combined worship service is being held at Park Avenue United Church on April 30th. Darlene
Friars has connected with the organists and choirs of the other churches in ONE for coordination;
Rev. Steve Longmoore will be leading the service. Sherry Fulton (from Glen View United Church)
will be contacting Doris Messer with regard to food and drink requirements for the reception after
the service. Doris asked whether the dividers could be taken down to allow more space for the
reception. (It was eventually agreed that the dividers could be taken down as Sunday School would
be finished the week before the joint service).
LIVING WATER CONCERT
Also taking place on April 30th, from 2 PM to 4 PM, is the musical concert with Living Water.
Tracy Friars is preparing a poster; Darlene Friars has contacted the group; and there will be
advertising via Rogers, CBC, the church bulletin and other circulated posters. A free-will offering
will be taken.
GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE
The service for Good Friday will be held at Silver Falls United Church at 10:30 AM. Tracy will be
sending a note to those who will be participating in this service.
Rev. Longmoore reviewed several Remits with the meeting. If there is a requirement to change the
basis of the United Church, churches must agree and offer input to the proposed changes. Remits
have been circulated for approval or rejection. If a pastoral charge does not vote on each remit, its
vote will be considered a "No".
REMIT 1: THREE COUNCIL MODEL
The question here is, do we want the new model, or keep Presbytery. If we continue as we are now,
assessments would be doubled to offset current structures. Ministers are expected to be part of
Presbytery. There are not enough volunteers to do the work.
VOTE ON REMIT 1: YES
REMIT 3: OFFICE OF VOCATION
This will assess the aptitude of leadership for a pastoral charge. Suitability for leadership in a
church would be a national responsibility with a national body which would oversee this and have
the final say.
VOTE ON REMIT 3: YES
REMIT 4: FUNDING A NEW MODEL
Currently, General Council gets $7 million per year from bequests - this will run out in 1 1/2 years.
M & S funds now go to M & S activities. M & S Funds would be split between the work of the
church and M & S.
VOTE ON REMIT 4: YES
REMIT 2: ELIMINATION OF TRANSFER & SETTLEMENT
This would eliminate the requirement for newly ordained ministers to accept placement wherever
requested to do so and allow them secure their own placement.
VOTE ON REMIT 2: YES
REMIT 6: ONE ORDER OF MINISTRY
This remit was discussed regarding responsibilities of Designated Lay Ministers and Ordained
Ministers, their length of study and training, recognition by other denominations, and recognition
VOTE ON REMIT 6: NO
